World Geography: Continents & Regional Geography

The Earth's landmass is divided into seven major continents. Here is a brief overview of their significant geographical features.

1. Asia

  • Size: Largest and most populous continent, covering about 30% of Earth's land area.
  • Boundaries: Bounded by the Arctic Ocean (North), Pacific Ocean (East), Indian Ocean (South), and Europe/Africa (West). Separated from Europe by the Ural Mountains, Caspian Sea, Caucasus Mountains, and Black Sea.
  • Major Mountains: Himalayas (Mount Everest, 8848.86m - highest in the world), Karakoram, Tien Shan, Altai.
  • Major Rivers: Yangtze (longest in Asia), Huang He (Yellow River), Mekong, Ganges, Indus, Ob, Yenisey.
  • Major Deserts: Gobi (cold desert), Arabian, Thar.
  • Special Features: Contains the lowest point on land (Dead Sea), the highest plateau (Tibetan Plateau - "Roof of the World"), and the deepest lake (Lake Baikal).

2. Africa

  • Size: Second-largest continent.
  • Geographical Location: The only continent through which all three major latitudes pass: Equator, Tropic of Cancer, and Tropic of Capricorn.
  • Major Mountains: Atlas Mountains (Northwest), Mount Kilimanjaro (highest peak, located in Tanzania).
  • Major Rivers: Nile (longest in the world), Congo (crosses the equator twice), Niger, Zambezi (Victoria Falls).
  • Major Deserts: Sahara (largest hot desert in the world), Kalahari, Namib.
  • Special Features: The Great Rift Valley (a series of contiguous geographic trenches from Lebanon to Mozambique).

3. North America

  • Size: Third-largest continent.
  • Boundaries: Bounded by the Arctic Ocean (North), Atlantic Ocean (East), Pacific Ocean (West), and South America (South - connected by the Isthmus of Panama).
  • Major Mountains: Rocky Mountains (West), Appalachian Mountains (East), Mount Denali (McKinley - highest peak, in Alaska).
  • Major Rivers: Mississippi-Missouri system (longest in NA), Colorado (Grand Canyon), Mackenzie (Canada).
  • Major Lakes: The Great Lakes (Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario). Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake by surface area.

4. South America

  • Size: Fourth-largest continent, largely in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • Major Mountains: Andes Mountains (longest continental mountain range in the world). Highest peak is Mount Aconcagua (Argentina).
  • Major Rivers: Amazon River (largest river in the world by discharge volume of water, second longest).
  • Major Deserts: Atacama Desert (driest non-polar desert in the world, in Chile).
  • Special Features: Amazon Rainforest (largest tropical rainforest), Angel Falls (highest uninterrupted waterfall, in Venezuela), Lake Titicaca (highest navigable lake).

5. Antarctica

  • Size: Fifth-largest continent. Contains the geographic South Pole.
  • Characteristics: Coldest, driest, and windiest continent. About 98% is covered by the Antarctic ice sheet, which contains 70% of the world's fresh water.
  • Flora/Fauna: Penguins, seals, nematodes, tardigrades. No permanent human residents (only research stations like India's Maitri and Bharati).
  • Highest Peak: Vinson Massif.

6. Europe

  • Size: Sixth-largest continent.
  • Major Mountains: Alps (Mont Blanc), Pyrenees, Carpathian, Caucasus (Mount Elbrus - highest peak in Europe).
  • Major Rivers: Volga (longest in Europe), Danube (flows through 10 countries), Rhine, Thames.
  • Special Features: A peninsula of peninsulas (Scandinavian, Iberian, Italian, Balkan). Highly indented coastline providing excellent natural harbors.

7. Australia (Oceania)

  • Size: Smallest continent and one of the largest countries on Earth. Often called the "Island Continent".
  • Major Mountains: Great Dividing Range. Highest peak is Mount Kosciuszko.
  • Major Rivers: Murray-Darling river system.
  • Major Deserts: Great Victoria Desert, Great Sandy Desert.
  • Special Features: The Great Barrier Reef (world's largest coral reef system, off the NE coast), unique marsupial wildlife (kangaroos, koalas).
