S&T Masterclass: The Shield of India
Phase 1: Missile Technology (Guidance & Propulsion)
India's missile power is built on self-reliance and precision engineering.
1. Classification by Range & Flight
- Ballistic: Parabolic path. Leaves and re-enters atmosphere. Range: 500 km to 10,000+ km (Agni-V is ICBM).
- Cruise: Stays in atmosphere. Guided by GPS/Radar. Low altitude flight (Terrain Hugging). (BrahMos, Nirbhay).
- Anti-Tank (ATGM): Uses IR (Infrared) to track tank heat. (Nag, Helina).
2. Speed Thresholds
- Subsonic: < Speed of sound (Mach 1). Ex: Nirbhay.
- Supersonic: Mach 1 to Mach 5. Ex: BrahMos.
- Hypersonic: > Mach 5. Ex: HSTDV (Testing phase).
Phase 2: Sea Power (The Blue Water Navy)
1. Nuclear Submarines (The Silent Killers)
- SSBN: Nuclear-powered, carries nuclear missiles. INS Arihant (Indigenous), INS Arighat.
- SSN: Nuclear-powered, but carries conventional weapons. (Leased INS Chakra).
2. Aircraft Carriers
- INS Vikramaditya: Modified Russian carrier.
- INS Vikrant: India's first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC-1).
Phase 3: Nuclear Energy (Fission to Fusion)
1. How a Reactor Works
- Fuel: U235 or Pu239 (Fissile). Th232 (Fertile - must be converted).
- Moderator: Slows down neutrons (Heavy water D2тАЛO, Graphite).
- Control Rods: Absorbs neutrons to stop chain reaction (Boron, Cadmium).
2. The 3-Stage Roadmap (The Thorium Dream)
- Stage 1 (PHWR): Uses Natural Uranium. By-product is Plutonium.
- Stage 2 (FBR - Fast Breeder): Uses Plutonium to convert Thorium into U233.
- Stage 3 (AHWR): Uses U233 from Thorium. Ultimate goal for energy independence.
Phase 4: The Exam Edge (High-Yield Facts)
- A-SAT Mission (Shakti): India destroyed a satellite in orbit (2019), becoming the 4th space powerhouse.
- Pinaka: Multi-barrel rocket system (Area saturation weapon).
- Smiling Buddha (1974): Peaceful Nuclear Explosion (PNE).
- BrahMos: Joint venture with Russia. World's only supersonic cruise missile in all 3 formats (Land/Sea/Air).
[!IMPORTANT]
Nuclear Fusion: The process that powers the Sun and Hydrogen Bombs. It requires millions of degrees of temperature. No commercial reactor exists yet (ITER is an international experiment).
