Forging a State out of Sand and Swords
At the dawn of independence in 1947, "Rajasthan" as we know it did not exist. Instead, the region of Rajputana was a fractured mosaic of 19 Princely States, 3 Chiefships (Lava, Kushalgarh, Neemrana), and 1 British centrally administered province (Ajmer-Merwara).
The monumental task of integrating these proud and fiercely independent states was spearheaded by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (The Iron Man of India) and his secretary V.P. Menon, through the newly formed State Department (established 5 July 1947).
The complete unification of Rajasthan took an astonishing 8 years, 7 months, and 14 days, unfolding in 7 distinct, carefully negotiated stages.
