The Chauhans: The Fire-Born Warriors of Rajasthan

The Chauhans (Chahamanas) were one of the most prominent Rajput dynasties that ruled various parts of Rajasthan from the 6th to the 14th century. Known for their legendary bravery and resistance against foreign invaders, their history is a saga of valor and sacrifice.

1. Origins and the Sapadlaksha Era

  • Agnikunda Theory: According to Chand BardaiтАЩs Prithviraj Raso, the Chauhans originated from the sacrificial fire-pit of Sage Vashishtha at Mount Abu.
  • Bijolia Inscription (1170 AD): This provides a more historical perspective, describing the Chauhans as "Vatsa Gotriya Brahmins".
  • Founder: Vasudeva Chauhan (551 AD) established the kingdom around the Sambhar Lake (Sapadlaksha). His capital was Ahichhatrapur (Modern Nagaur).

B. Vigraharaj IV (Bisaldeo) (1153тАУ1163 AD)

  • He was a great scholar and poet; he wrote the Sanskrit drama "Harekeli".
  • Built the Sanskrit Kanthabharan Pathshala in Ajmer (later converted to Adhai Din ka Jhonpra by Qutb-ud-din Aibak).
  • Constructed the Bisalsagar Dam in Tonk.

C. Prithviraj Chauhan III (1177тАУ1192 AD)

  • Known by the title "Rai Pithora" and "Dal Pungul" (World Conqueror).
  • Digvijay Policy: He defeated his cousin Nagarjun, the Bhandanaks, the Chandelas of Mahoba (Battle of Mahoba - Alha & Udal), and the Chalukyas of Gujarat.
  • Battles of Tarain:
    • First Battle (1191): Prithviraj decisively defeated Muhammad Ghori.
    • Second Battle (1192): Ghori returned with a larger force; Prithviraj was defeated, marking a turning point in Indian history.
  • Court Scholars: Chand Bardai (Prithviraj Raso), Jayanak (Prithviraj Vijay), Vagishwar, and Janardan.

3. The Ranthambore Resistance

  • Founded by Govindraj (son of Prithviraj III) in 1194 AD.
  • Hammir Dev Chauhan (1282тАУ1301): The most famous ruler, known for his stubbornness (Hammir Hath).
  • The Siege of 1301: Alauddin Khalji attacked Ranthambore. Due to the betrayal of generals Ranmal and Ratipal, the fort fell.
  • First Saka of Rajasthan: Queen Rang Devi performed the first recorded Jauhar (Water Jauhar) in Rajasthan history.

4. The Jalore (Sonagara) Struggle

  • Founded by Kirtipal Chauhan (1181 AD).
  • Kanhadad Dev Chauhan: Resisted the expansion of Alauddin Khalji. The story is detailed in PadmanabhтАЩs "Kanhadad Dev Prabandh".
  • Saka of 1311: Jalore fort was besieged; after the betrayal by Dahiya Bika, the Rajputs performed Saka. Khalji renamed Jalore to "Jalalabad".

5. Other Notable Branches

  • Hada Chauhans: Ruled Bundi (founded by Deva Hada) and Kota (founded by Madho Singh).
  • Devda Chauhans: Ruled Sirohi (founded by Lumbha).
  • Khichi Chauhans: Ruled Gagron (Jhalawar).

[!TIP]
The Chauhans are unique because they established multiple powerful independent seats (Ajmer, Ranthambore, Jalore, Sirohi, Bundi) that each played a critical role in resisting imperial powers for centuries.
