Performing Arts: Rhythms of the Soil
Phase 1: Institutional Classification
Dances are classified as Folk, Tribal, or Professional.
1. Ghoomar
- The State Dance. Symbol of Rajput prestige.
- Use of 8 steps called Sawai.
2. Terah Taali (Kamad Sect)
- Performed by women sitting. 13 cymbals (Manjiras) tied to legs and arms.
- Dedicated to Ramdev ji.
3. Agni Dance (Jasnathis)
- Performed on hot embers. Slogan: Fateh Fateh.
- Main center: Katiyasar (Bikaner).
4. Gair (Bhils)
- Performed in circles with sticks during Holi.
Phase 2: Folk Drama (Lok Natya)
1. Khayal
- Kuchamani Khayal: Performed in open stages. Famous: Lachhiram.
- Shekhawati Khayal: Famous: Nanuram & Duliyaran.
2. Tamasha (Jaipur)
- Performed in an open arena called Akhada. Brought from Maharashtra during Pratap Singh's reign.
3. Rammat (Bikaner/Jaisalmer)
- Musical drama performed on platforms (Pata). Famous: Tej Kavi.
4. Gauri (Mewar)
- Tribal dance-drama of the Bhils. Based on Shiva and Bhasmasur legend.
