Fundamentals of Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation
Understanding the basic units of ecology, trophic levels, energy flow (10% rule), and strategies for In-situ and Ex-situ biodiversity conservation.
1. Basic Concepts of Ecology
Ecology is the study of interactions between organisms and their environment.
- Ecosystem: A functional unit of nature where living organisms interact among themselves and with the physical environment.
- Ecotone: A zone of junction between two or more diverse ecosystems (e.g., Mangroves between terrestrial and marine ecosystems). They have high biodiversity (Edge Effect).
- Ecological Niche: The unique functional role or place of a species in an ecosystem. No two species can have the exact same niche (Competitive Exclusion Principle).
2. Energy Flow and Food Chains
Energy flows unidirectionally in an ecosystem.
- 10% Law (Lindeman): Only about 10% of the energy from one trophic level is transferred to the next. The rest is lost as heat.
- Food Web: A complex network of interconnected food chains. Higher complexity in a food web means higher stability for the ecosystem.
- Biomagnification: The increasing concentration of toxic substances (like DDT or Mercury) at successive higher trophic levels.
3. Biodiversity
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth at all its levels.
- Genetic Diversity: Variation of genes within a species.
- Species Diversity: Variety of species within a region.
- Ecosystem Diversity: Variety of habitats, biological communities, and ecological processes. Biodiversity Hotspots: Regions that are both rich in endemic species (found nowhere else) and highly threatened. India has 4 hotspots: The Himalayas, Western Ghats, Indo-Burma region, and Sundaland (Nicobar).
4. Conservation Strategies
- In-situ (On-site) Conservation: Conserving species in their natural habitats (e.g., National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Biosphere Reserves).
- Ex-situ (Off-site) Conservation: Conserving species outside their natural habitats (e.g., Zoological parks, Botanical gardens, Seed banks, Cryopreservation).
